Social media star and stand-up comedian Apoorva Mukhija, also known as 'The Rebel Kid,' was in the news a few days ago when she deleted all her Instagram posts days and unfollowed all the accounts on her Instagram page. The extreme measure comes after the 'India's Got Latent' scandal that has rocked leading personalities in showbiz.
Apoorva was popularized on the internet with her rants and utterances, which were unconventional and have resonated with the youth population. Her behavior can potentially come into conflict with social conformity, and as such, she soon built a fan base of 2.9 million Instagram followers. She made it so big that cameos in other places became a norm, such as YouTuber and comedian Samay Raina's 'India's Got Latent.'
'India's Got Latent' is a roasting show hosted by Samay Raina, and the celebrities and socialites are the guests on the show. The show attempts to be humorous with its adult content and honest dialogue. But on a show that had Apoorva Mukhija, Ashish Chanchlani, Ranveer Allahbadia, and Jaspreet Singh as the guests, one of the remarks made by Allahbadia triggered humongous outrage. His remark, which was viewed as insensitive and insulting, saw the public and authoritative bodies lodging complaints against the parties involved.
The aftermath of the scandal saw official complaints being filed against Ranveer Allahbadia, Apoorva Mukhija, Samay Raina, and the show organizers. The complaints were all along on the lines of dissemination of indecent words and obscenity in society. As the matter was grave, Samay Raina deleted all videos of 'India's Got Latent' from his YouTube account, assuring his cooperation in any manner to the officials. He further added, "All that has been happening has been too much for me. I have deleted all 'India's Got Latent' videos from my account. My only intention was to entertain and make people laugh. I will cooperate with all agencies fully to reach a reasonable conclusion to their investigations."
Allahbadia apologized publicly as well, grabbing his moment of ignorance and expressing regret over his words. He said his comment was not appropriate and even not funny, "My comment wasn't appropriate, it wasn't even funny. Comedy isn't my game, I am just here to apologize."
At the time of the scandal, Apoorva went so far as to deleting all the posts on her Instagram page, bringing her accounts followed cout to zero but not deleting her 2.9 million followers. The action was interpreted by most as a reaction to the mounting pressure and public criticism she was facing. Busy being vocal online, this virtual withdrawal was a theatrical contrast to her social media existence.
One month after her exit, Apoorva returned silently to Instagram. She posted a cryptic message on her broadcast channel, "Diwaaro ke bhi kaan hote hain" (Even walls have ears), and an expression of gratitude to her well-wishers. This return, though subdued, was her resumption of interaction with her fans.
The 'India's Got Latent' scandal has raised arguments regarding the limits of what is amusing and the responsibility of content creators. It shows the fine line between creativity freedom and societal values, highlighting the possible dangers of content that crosses perceived decency boundaries.
Apoorva Mukhija's experience is a stark reminder of the question being asked by digital influencers these days. Her reaction to the scandal is a reflection of the broader issues of authenticity and yet maintaining social norms. The scandal also introduces a re-evaluation of content standards and how much it is necessary to remain vigilant while engaging on the net.
