In a touching demonstration of national solidarity with the victims of the latest terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, world-class playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has officially cancelled her much-awaited concert in Surat. This follows singer Arijit Singh, who recently cancelled his Chennai concert. Ghoshal's action is a firm demonstration of national solidarity and shared sorrow.
Shreya and the organizers of the event issued a joint statement on Saturday that the show had been canceled. The concert was part of her All-Hearts Tour, scheduled for April 26 at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium.
Given the recent and unfortunate developments, the artist and the organizers have taken a mutual decision to cancel the show that was scheduled to be held in Surat this Saturday, 26th April. A full refund will be made to all who have purchased tickets.
This gesture shows the Indian singer's regard for Indian sentiments, particularly during times of sorrow, proving that the Indian soul is far superior to ego of fame or entertainment.
Shreya had already posted to her Instagram account to write her heartbreakingly sad reaction to the terrorist attack that had killed 26 civilians, 25 Indians and one Nepali national, and wounded a couple of others. Saturated in a profound sense of sorrow, she wrote:
“I could think of nothing but Pahalgam. Of the quiet that would have fallen after the noise. Of the families whose lives would be forever changed. My heart hurts envisioning lives lost in a location so serene, so lovely, lives that had absolutely nothing to do with any violence but were at its mercy. This is a break to the heart of our nation. Condolences to all the broken families due to this senseless brutality. We grieve with you. And we won't forget.”
Shreya is preceded by Arijit Singh, canceling his concert in Chennai on April 27. Singh also released a statement which read:
“In the wake of the sad recent occurrences, the performer and the organizer have jointly decided to postpone the upcoming performance in Chennai on this Sunday, the 27th of April."
In both of these two instances, the organizers have made this action of automatic refund by keeping in view the interest of the purchase holders of tickets and with total transparency.
The decision by two of India's most iconic voices to cancel concerts, even when there is tremendous financial and logistical interest at stake, is a telling indicator.
And terrorists, whose intent is to inspire fear and destroy peace, it is actions like these from all walks of society that steel India's resolve even more to stand and weep together and emerge stronger than ever before.
Even as the celebrations and shows are being rescheduled temporarily, the fabric of India is reinforced with togetherness. Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh's move is a witness to the real spirit of India — where the arts give way to respect for sacrifice, and grief is strength in society
