With the Fit India–led National Sports Day in 2025 being expanded into a three-day fitness movement, the nation is staging both a celebration and a reminder: Mission Olympics is on the national agenda, but success will depend on coherence between grassroots massing, elite preparation and governance fixes.

Mission Olympics: what it is and the elite pathway

“Mission Olympics” in India is a shorthand for the combined policy push—Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC), Khelo India talent pipelines, and state and private high-performance efforts—aimed at producing more Olympic-calibre athletes.

TOPS remains the flagship mechanism to identify and fund elite athletes with customized training plans, foreign camps, nutrition and sports science support; the Mission Olympic Cell supervises and fast-tracks athlete needs.

These institutional layers have helped produce standout performances in recent Games and remain central to India’s medal hopes.

Preparation on the ground: money, centres and mass participation

In the last few years India has substantially increased budgetary support and infrastructure. The central sports allocation for FY 2025–26 rose significantly, with Khelo India receiving major funding and the Ministry’s total outlay climbing steadily — a clear signal that grassroots talent identification and infrastructure are priority items.

Investments have funded Khelo India Centres, Sports Authority of India (SAI) academies, and more state-run high-performance centres. Alongside, corporates and some state governments are also building private academies and “centres of excellence.”

This dual focus — mass participation to widen the talent pool while giving elite athletes world-class support — is the core of India’s preparation roadmap.

Signs of progress — and the sobering scoreboard

There are measurable improvements: more athletes are getting scientific support, international exposure, and financial backing.

Recent Olympic outcomes also show there’s a gap between ambition and results. While India has improved its medal tally compared to previous decades, consistent dominance across multiple disciplines is still a challenge.

Turning investment into podiums requires not just money but long lead times, improved coaching pipelines across more sports, and consistent international competition exposure.

TOPS Expenditure 2024–25

The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) allocated ₹149 crore across 12 priority sports federations under assistance to NSF Scheme in the 2024–25 cycle.

Big challenges: governance, talent pipeline gaps and integrity

Several systemic problems complicate the Mission Olympics dream. Governance structures in many sports federations still need reforms to improve transparency, accountability and athlete welfare.

Talent pipelines are uneven: certain sports like shooting, wrestling, athletics, and boxing receive more attention and resources than many Olympic disciplines, leaving potential medal sports under-nurtured.

Another area of concern is the rise in doping cases, which has created both reputational risks and practical complications for preparation and selection. Addressing these challenges demands coordinated governance reform, better grassroots coaching in neglected sports, and a robust anti-doping education and enforcement system.

What National Sports Day should mean for Mission Olympics

The three-day National Sports Day push is an opportunity to convert public enthusiasm into practical outcomes: mass participation will grow the athlete base; school and community programs can feed talent into Khelo India Centres; state and corporate partnerships can sustain high-performance centres; and public attention can create political will for governance reforms.

But the real test is sustained policy focus: building coaches, sports science teams, transparent federations, and anti-doping capacity over years — not days.

India’s Mission Olympics combines admirable policy intent, rising budgetary support, and pockets of excellence.

National Sports Day’s three-day movement is a morale and participation booster — useful, necessary and symbolic. Yet bridging the gap from a larger talent pool to consistent Olympic podiums will require long-term investment in coaching, governance overhaul, clean sport enforcement, and patient development across many more disciplines.

On this National Sports Day, India celebrates fitness and honours Dhyan Chand — and should also take a hard, honest look at the structural fixes needed if the Mission Olympics aspiration is to become a predictable reality.
