A distressing incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday near the KR Puram railway station in Bengaluru, where a 19-year-old woman from Bihar was allegedly sexually assaulted. The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the city, took place shortly after the woman arrived in Bengaluru from Ernakulam, Kerala, after completing a training program. The police have since arrested two suspects in connection with the crime.
The young woman had boarded a train from Ernakulam and arrived in Bengaluru around 1:10 am on Wednesday. Her brother had come to receive her at the KR Puram railway station, and the two decided to head to a restaurant in Mahadevapura for a late-night meal before returning home. As they were making their way through the area, they were unknowingly followed by two men.
According to police sources, the attackers took advantage of the relatively deserted surroundings and began trailing the siblings. As the duo proceeded, the two men approached and launched a violent attack.
In a horrific turn of events, the two men assaulted both the woman and her brother. While one of the assailants overpowered the brother and allegedly beat him, the other dragged the woman to a nearby isolated area and raped her. The brutal crime was carried out despite the victim's desperate cries for help.
Senior police officer Shivakumar confirmed the details, stating: “They were followed by two individuals who assaulted them and raped the woman. The attackers managed to overpower her brother and forcibly took the woman away.”
Fortunately, the woman's cries for help did not go unheard. Alert and concerned locals, disturbed by the noise and screams, rushed to the scene. Demonstrating quick presence of mind and courage, the residents managed to intervene in time. They apprehended one of the accused and handed him over to the police.
Bengaluru police also responded swiftly to the emergency. A Cheetah patrol unit, stationed nearby, reached the spot within minutes of receiving the alert. Their prompt arrival helped secure the crime scene and initiate the manhunt for the second attacker, who had fled the scene. He was later traced and arrested.
Both accused individuals hail from Mulabagilu and are reportedly working as auto drivers in Bengaluru. They are now in police custody and have been booked under multiple charges, including rape, kidnapping, forcible detention, and physical assault. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will emerge as the case progresses.
Senior police officials have reassured the public that stringent action will be taken against the culprits. “We are ensuring that the investigation is thorough and swift. Such heinous crimes will not be tolerated,” Shivakumar added.
This incident has sparked renewed concern over women's safety in urban areas, especially during nighttime. The assault has once again highlighted the importance of better lighting, surveillance, and increased police patrolling in and around transport hubs like railway stations.
As the investigation continues, the victim is receiving medical care and support. Authorities have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure safer environments for all.
