Recently, a devasting stampede happened during a Hindu religion gathering in Uttar Pradesh resulting in the brutal death of approximately 121 people, with most of the victim being women and children. This tragic incident is considered as the most devastating stampedes in recent years. 

According to the authorities,approximately 250,000 people, almost thricethe permissible capacity had gathered in a village in Hathras District which is around 200 km southeast of New Delhi.

Mandhara Devi temple January 2005

More than 265 Hindu worshippers lost their lives and hundreds of them were injured in a stampede at the Mandhara Devi temple in Wai town, Maharashtra.

According to the reports, the slippery steps of the temple led to the stampede.

August 2008Landslide stampede

Approximately 145 Hindu pilgrims passed away at the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh after the fake rumours of the landslide spread which triggered a stampede.

Chamundeshwari temple September 2008

A total no of 250 individuals were trampled to death due to a stampede at the Chamundeshwari temple in Rajasthan during the Navaratri Festival honoring Goddess Durga.  

March 2010Incident

Over 63 individuals, including half of them being children lost their lives in a stampede caused by a large crowd rushing for free food and clothes at a Hindu temple in Uttar Pradesh. 

February 2013Kumbh Mela Stampede

Several Around 36 Hindu pilgrims died in a stampede during the crowded day of the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh. The event attracts over 100 million pilgrims over the time of 2 months.  

November 2013Navratri Celebration

During the Navratri celebrations at the Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh, around 115 people died and over a hundred were injured in a stampede. More than 150,000 people were gathered at the temple at that time.

Vaishno Devi Temple January 2022

Twelve individuals died and several others were injured in a stampede at the Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir.

The tragedy happened when a large crowd of devotees attempted to enter the shrine through its narrow entrance.
