Govt Implements ‘Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme’ Initiative

In the recently announced Budget 2024, the government introduced the Prime Ministers Internship Scheme, designed to offer meaningful work experience to the youth of India. The scheme has now been implemented, and over 1.55 lakh+ (155,000) candidates have signed up, signaling a strong interest in the program.
The Internship scheme has received support from numerous major companies across the country. 193 companies have already listed over 90,800 internship opportunities on the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme portal. These opportunities span across 25 sectors and are spread across 36 States/UTs and 737 districts in India. Some of the companies participating include prominent names such as Maruti Suzuki, Reliance Industries, Eicher Motors, Larsen & Toubro, Jubilant Foodworks, and Muthoot Finances. This initiative includes a range of private sector companies, demonstrating a strong dedication to youth employment.
The internship scheme provides students with the opportunity to gain exposure to real-world business settings in various industries. Interns can work for 12 months in diverse professions, significantly enhancing their job prospects. Participants will receive an internship allowance of IN 5,000 per month, along with a one-time assistance amount of IN 6,000 to help cover their expenses.

The internship opportunities are available in 25 sectors, with the greatest demand in oil, gas, and energy, followed by travel and hospitality, automotive, banking, and financial services. Youth can pursue internships in more than 20 areas, such as operation management, production and construction, maintenance, and sales and marketing. This extensive range of availability allows aspiring interns to discover opportunities throughout the country.

The scheme aims to generate one crore internships within the next five years, offering substantial assistance to young job seekers. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of IN 5,000 for the duration of the 12-month internship period.
Companies offering these internships are expected to provide actual working experience with relevant skills. A minimum of 50% of the internship should occur in a practical job setting instead of a classroom. If a company is unable to offer direct experience, it should collaborate with partners in its supply chain or related organizations.
