The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, warning of significant health risks due to the extreme heat. A severe heatwave has gripped Punjab and several parts of North India, with temperatures soaring above 45°C in many areas.

Punjab's Scorching Temperatures

According to IMD, there will be excessive heat and the temperature will remain above normal until June 11. Reportedly, Bathinda with an intensified heatwave recorded the highest temperature at 44.8°C.

Other districts, including Sirsa and Samrala, have also experienced temperatures exceeding 46°C. The average maximum temperature in the state has risen by 2.5°C, which is 3.5°C above normal. Night temperatures have also increased than the seasonal average.

The India Meteorological department on Monday issued an orange alert till June 10 in 13 districts of Punjab. These include Jalandhar, Muktsar, Tarn Taran, Mohali, Amritsar, Rupnagar, Kapurthala and Patiala.

Also, the department has issued yellow alert to the cities including Ludhiana, Moga, Mansa, Bathinda and Fazilka. The predictions significantly state that the conditions are likely to normalize by June 12 where the improvement can be seen From June 11 only.

IMD's Advice to Public

The excessive heat has disrupted daily life across the region. Schools have been closed, and government offices are operating with reduced hours to protect citizens from the extreme conditions.

Taking the conditions into consideration, the IMD has urged the public to stay alert and asked the people to stay hydrated, advising public to wear lightweight cotton clothes. The department took to its official 'X' account, wrote-

"Drink sufficient water - even if not thirsty. Use ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water) lemon water, buttermilk, etc. to keep yourself hydrated."

Sharing a video in the post, the department highlighted the precautions that can give relief to the public. It highlighted-

Moreover, sources reveal that from June 13 to 15, relief can be expected as there is the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40 -50 kmph) in Punjab and Haryana. However, the extended period of extreme heat has raised concerns about its impact on overall public health.

Heatwave Projections

The heatwave is not confined to Punjab. Delhi has experienced its hottest day of the season, with temperatures reaching 45.5°C, and the "feels-like" temperature touching 49°C due to high humidity. Similar conditions are reported in Rajasthan, where temperatures have crossed 47°C in several districts.
