In a remarkable achievement in transport technology, the Indian Railways first hyperloop test track is ready. This is Indias first 410-meter Hyperloop test track, developed by India Railways along with IIT Madras.
Marking this significant development, Rail Minister Ashwini Vishnaw shared a video of the test track earlier on Thursday, December 3, 2024, via his official social media handle.
Watch: Bharats first Hyperloop test track (410 meters) completed. Team Railways, IIT-Madras, Avishkar Hyperloop team, and Tutr (incubated startup), he mentioned in his recent post on X.
This revolutionary project by Indian Railways has been developed by IIT Madrass Avishkar Hyperloop Team in collaboration with TUTr, a startup incubated at the institute. The Avishkar team comprised 76 undergraduates and postgraduates from IIT Madras.
The TUTr Hyperloop at IIT Madras National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) has partnered with Tata Steel in this project.
The project has been developed using hyperloop technology, ensuring high-speed travel by using magnetic levitation within low-pressure tubes. The project has been planned within two phases. The first phase will include an 11.5 km test track to exhibit and certify the technology. The second phase will cover approximately 100 kilometers.
Equipped with the high-speed resistance, the hyperloop trains for the test track are designed with the speed of up to 1,100 kmph. With an operational speed of 360kmph, the trains will be able to smoothly cover the distance in this vacuum-sealed tube. It enables faster travel and energy efficiency.
The Mumbai-Pune corridor will be the first full-scale Hyperloop project in India. This revolutionizing railway system will reduce the average time to travel between these two cities from 3 hours 23 minutes to 25 minutes.
However, despite making efficient progress, the project is still in its developmental stages.
The Hyperloop technology is a fast-speed transportation system where pods (the train) travel through a sealed tube with low air pressure. This ultimately reduces the friction and air resistance, allowing pods to run at incredible speed.
Each pod has the capacity to carry 24-28 passengers between destinations without immediate stops. This makes it an efficient option for point-to-point travel. This Hyperloop technology promises better connectivity and use of cutting-edge technology.
