The Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann and AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal on June 11 (Wednesday) laid the foundation stone for the Burlton Park Sports Hub. This marks the beginning of a new era which is aimed at restoring the city's sporting glory and positioning Punjab as a leader in both sports and industry.

This remarkable project is being revived under the AAP government with a budget of approximately Rs 78 crore. On the completion of the Project, the park will turn to an amazing multi-sports complex offering numerous sports-related opportunities.

Inquilab Zindabad, Says CM Mann in his address

CM Bhagwant Mann, during the ceremony, addressed the public, highlighting the city's sports legacy. He cast light on the leading players of Punjab in various sports category. He said that there are almost eight players in the Indian Hockey team who belong to Punjab.

While extending, he noted on the state's lost glory in the sports which he wants to restore through such committed efforts. He added, under this project, multi-purpose stadiums will be built to play a key role in connecting youth with sports. The sports grounds will provide every facility to the young players. They will also be trained for competitions.

"Our government is committed to promoting the sports culture in Punjab and connecting the state's youth with the playgrounds," said the Chief Minister.

While speaking at the ceremony, the chief Minister mentioned of the renowned names including Milkha Singh, Tara Singh, citing them as role models of the youth. He added that when there will be complete facilities available for the youth in their own area, their interests will automatically turn to follow the legacy of legend personalities.

He further cited a example of Harbhajan Singh, former Indian Cricket Player, said, "even he has practiced in the ground before making it to the India Cricket Team."

CM also asked suggested to change the name of Burlton Park as it is the British name, welcoming the suggestions from the public. He suggested to name the park after the names of sports personalities from Punjab who has done great in the field.

Connecting this infrastructural development to the society welfare and holistic development of the locals, he added, reviving sports will also play a key role in the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh'(Anti-drug drive). He said that this will channelize the youth's energy towards the positive change.

CM Mann mentioned that after the development in Jalandhar, the idea is to develop another cricket stadium in Amritsar. With this, the Punjab will have its own three stadiums: Mullanpur, Jalandhar and Amritsar.

He rose the slogan 'Inquilab Zindabad' (Long Live Revolution) to which there was loud cheer from the audience.

AAP Convener Kejriwal's address

Aam Aadmi Party Convener, Arvind Kejriwal while speaking at the ceremony referred the days as "historic." He emphasized that the sports complex would provide thousands with opportunities to engage in sports and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

He highlighted the state's past decline due to "regressive" policies and stressed the need for bold measures to restore Punjab's former glory. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to help guide the youth towards sports and away from drugs, as part of the 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign. He said-

"The goal of the Punjab government is clear to connect children in every village and city with sports and keep them away from drugs."

He further stressed on the role Jalandhar city in sports equipment manufacturing. He added of the World Rugby Tournament that is going to be held in August- September in England. He said, the ball which will be used in the tournament is manufactured by the one of the factories of Jalandhar.

Jalandhar's Sporting Legacy

Jalandhar has a strong history of producing top athletes, especially in hockey. Many national and international players have come from this city, with talent passed down through three generations. But poor political decisions over the years have slowed down Punjab's progress in sports.

Chief Minister Mann said, "it's time to bring back the state's sporting glory with serious and smart efforts." On completion of the project, there will modern stadiums, training centers, and recreational spaces in the park. This will be built on EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Consruction Model.

This development is expected to not only enhance the sports sector but also boost employment and contribute to the state's industrial growth. Jalandhar is known for its sports equipment manufacturing, is set to benefit from the growing demand for quality sports gear. The state's commitment to excellence in both sports and industry can make it a top center for sports manufacturing in India.
