Shetty Dominates Yang to Lift US Open Crown

In the men’s singles title clash, 20-year-old Ayush Shetty delivered a commanding performance to defeat third seed Brian Yang 21-18, 21-13 in just 47 minutes. The contest began with both players evenly matched, tied at 6-6, but Shetty soon pulled ahead with a flurry of winners to take an 11-6 lead at the first interval. Though Yang fought back to level the score at 16-16, Shetty’s composure and precise placement helped him seal the opening game with a decisive jump smash.

The second game saw Shetty come out aggressively, racing to a 7-2 lead. Despite a brief comeback by Yang, the Indian shuttler displayed tactical brilliance, mixing tight net play and deep smashes to regain control. A Breakthrough Year for Shetty

The triumph marks a breakthrough for Shetty, who has been knocking on the door of major titles over the past two seasons. A bronze medallist at the 2023 Junior World Championships, Shetty had earlier reached the finals of the 2023 Odisha Masters Super 100, 2023 Bahrain International, and the 2024 Dutch Open, but fell just short of victory in all three.

This latest win is also his third over Brian Yang in 2025, having previously bested the Canadian at both the Malaysia and Taipei Opens earlier in the season. Shetty’s road to the title in the US Open was particularly impressive, including a comeback win over top-seeded Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals.

Tanvi Sharma Impresses in Runner-Up Finish

In the women’s singles final, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma put up a valiant fight against top-seeded American Beiwen Zhang before falling short in a three-game battle. Playing in her first BWF World Tour final, the unseeded Indian showed maturity and resilience despite losing 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in a 46-minute contest.

Zhang took early control in the first game, surging to an 11-5 lead which Sharma couldn’t recover from. However, the young Indian bounced back strongly in the second game, racing to a 4-0 lead and maintaining her aggressive play to win 21-16. In the decider, Zhang’s experience came to the fore as she cruised to an 11-4 lead at the break and wrapped up the match with ease.

Bright Future Ahead for Indian Badminton

Despite falling short in the women’s final, Tanvi Sharma’s performance at just 16 years of age highlights the depth and potential of India's next generation of shuttlers. Her run to the final, combined with Shetty’s title-winning effort, is a significant boost for Indian badminton.
