Patriot of the Country: Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh Surrendered Final Battle of His Life in Udhampur Encounter

On the 24th of April, 2025, at dawn, the dense forest of Dudu-Basantgarh region of the district of Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a survival battle of courage and strength. Due to some news of intelligence regarding terror activity in the region, there was a high-risk mission in coordination between the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
In dense cover and territory under the control of the enemy, courageous Indian Army soldiers of its best 6 Para Special Forces ventured ahead. Among them was one such courageous son of the soil, Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh, who led from the front as soldiers chased away terrorists in a fierce firefight.
Though badly wounded during the gunfight, Havaldar Shaikh fought even after he had been shot in the body. He was hospitalized and treated but his wounds proved to be too lethal. One of the best that this country has to offer—whose blood symbolized fearlessness, grit, and just plain patriotism—died.
Ranked as Havaldar in the Indian Army, Shaikh had shifted from West Bengal to Gujarat. Shaikh was a seasoned warhorse of the Army, who had fought with distinction and honor. Shaikh was a man of valor and discipline and had even been part of some daredevil counter-insurgency operations. Being himself, a Para Special Forces commando, Shaikh was well aware of risky postings as well.
According to reports, Shaikh performed the riskiest job every day on his will, obstinacy bringing other troopers of the trooper into line. Shaikh's martyrdom at Udhampur is not a killing of a trooper but an assassination of a leader, fellow soldier, and patriot soul who laid down his life so that other individuals could live peacefully among themselves. The Indian Army mentioned in their obituary,
The Udhampur encounter is not an isolated one. It is one of the overall trends of increase in terror activities in the area. It is learnt from security forces that terrorists involved in April 24 operation were noticed traveling across international border in the Hiranagar sector, an old line of crossing.
Last month on March 23, some terrorists had successfully surrounded the Dolka forest belt of Saniyal village. There was a large search and raid operation that resulted in a bitter encounter at the Sufain forest on the 27th of March. The operation, although successful in so far as the nuisance had been eliminated, ended with four gallant policemen injured.
In another raid in the Chatroo sector of Kishtwar district on April 11 and 12, three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists were killed by security forces. The two consecutive operations are a testament to the relentless threat faced by India's security forces and the unflinching vigil these security forces remain awake to protect its citizens.
As the people had been made aware of Havaldar Shaikh's martyrdom, tributes began to pour in from all corners of the nation. The comrades, the masses, even the leaders themselves, recognized his act with respect. The Indian Army's Northern Command released, in a note of mourning, "Braveheart gave ultimate sacrifice during performing duty. We salute his courage and join hands with his family at this hour of tragedy.".
His remains will be sent back home to his hometown for a complete military honor funeral. The tricolor will be draped over this Indian son's corpse, and the country will weep—though in pride.
The tale of Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh makes one realize the cost paid every day for peace and freedom for which the nation harvests its dividends. While others sleep, quiet warriors like him are patrolling our borders with impossible faith, giving up their tomorrows at the altar of our today.
His life will inspire generations of Indians to come. His sacrifice touches us with the philosophy of "Service Before Self"—the very philosophy that guides the Indian Army. With his martyrdom, he has kindled a flame of patriotism that will smolder and blaze ever brighter and brighter in the hearts of all Indians.
