Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar on the occasion of his 69th death anniversary on Friday, December 6, 2024. He said that Ambedkars tireless efforts and spirit to fight for equality and human dignity has inspired many generations and will continue to do so.
On Mahaparinirvan Diwas, we bow to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of our constitution and a beacon of social justice. Dr BR Ambedkars tireless fight for equality and human dignity continues to inspire generations. Today as we remember his contributions, we also reiterate our commitment to fulfilling his vision. In India, December 6, every year is observed as Mahaparinirvan Diwas, marking the death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian constitution.
Dr BR Ambedkar, often referred as Babasaheb Ambedkar is a prominent Indian Jurist, economist, politician and social reformer. He is known for drafting the Indian constitution and his relentless contributions to eradicate social issues like discrimination against Dalits, Untouchables and other sections of the community. He was among seven members who drafted the constitution of India. In 1990, he was also revered with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award.
Marking, the occasion, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Former President Ram Nath Kovind, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar at the Parliament House Lawns.
Taking to X (formerly twitter), Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his gratitude, “To the champion of Constitution and social justice, Babasaheb has devoted his entire life to championing the democratic values of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice. It is a pressing need of the hour to defend, protect and safeguard his ideals and ideas, as also his finest contribution to the nation the constitution of India.
The Maharashtra Government has also declared a local holiday, in observation of the occasion.
The Mahaparinirvan Diwas commemorates the immense contribution of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, fondly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar in shaping the Indian constitution. The day holds a special significance and honors his legacy in social justice and equality.
As per Buddhism ideology, Mahaparinirvan is a Sanskrit term for Nirvana after death. The word Parinirvana is considered liberty from Karma, samara and cycle of death and birth. It is the most sacred day according to the Buddhist Calendar.
