April 28, 2025, morning was when Samastipur lad Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a mere 14 years old, phoned his childhood coach Manish Ojha. Having taught him the technique and on footwork, Suryavanshi remarked to him, "Sir, aaj mai marunga".
He told him, "Maarna, par wicket mat dena. Itminaan se khelna, Yashasvi se baat karte rehna" (Hit but do not lose your wicket. Play slowly, keep talking to Yashasvi).
He fulfilled his wish the same evening in Rajasthan Royals vs Gujarat Titans. He played a stunning 101 off just 38 balls with 11 sixes and seven fours and finished his century in a record 35 balls. This was the youngest centurion in IPL history record and the second fastest ever in tournament history.
Having Yashasvi Jaiswal in the team, the duo compiled 166 runs right from the start itself, and the Royals overcame the Titans by an immense eight-wicket lead. They hunted for 210 runs and won their goal in just 15.5 overs.
Suryavanshi's path to this triumph has been amazing in every sense. He was the youngest Indian cricketer to be signed by an IPL franchise in cricket history. The cricketer's life has been marked from the beginning by a triple-century in a U-19 game for Bihar and an India Under-19 century from 58 balls.
His aggressive batting and his meteoric rise to superstardom have reminded one of cricket heroes of yesteryear, and even cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar himself has contributed to the victory. Even Yusuf Pathan, gave him a heartwarming welcome, greeting the young boy's triumphant victory.
There was celebration in Bihar too as the people of the state welcomed their new hero with cakes and firecrackers. The success of Suryavanshi was a source of pride for the state in showcasing the far-reaching impact that his success has had in order to motivate other cricketers who would want to keep playing the sport from poor pockets.
This record-breaking feat put Suryavanshi on the IPL's history books and also administered to a generation of cricketers a spoonful of grit. His is a story that testifies to the merit of nurturing talent from all over the nation, and it contained the secret to a brighter future for Indian cricket.
