Sukhbir Singh Badal Completes 10-Day Religious Penance, Performs Ardas at Darbar Sahib

Former Chief Minister and Senior Akali Leader, Sukhbir Singh Badal, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, concluded his 10-day religious penance. He performed the Sewa for the second consecutive day at Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Muktsar, Punjab.
Notably, his religious penance has been announced by Akal Takht, the supreme temporal of Sikhs. Sukhbir Singh Badal and his Akali leaders have been declared as Tankhaiya, guilty of religious misconduct on December 2, 2024.
On his last day of religious punishment, he bowed down to seek pardon and performed Ardas, signifying the completion of his Sewa.
The Senior Akali leader, who has his leg fractured has performed the duty of guards and washed dishes at different gurudwaras in Punjab. He began his duties on December 3, 2024. He did Sewa at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar as the security guard. Badal wore a blue robe, a plaque of Gurbani verses around his neck, and held a spear in his hand. Badal and the party leaders were also asked to clean public toilets at the Golden Temple.
He performed all his duties as a part of his penance for the mistakes committed by him and his governance during his tenure from 2007 to 2017. He also performed Sewa at Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Takht Damdama Sahib, and Darbar Sahib in Muktsar and Fatehgarh Sahib for two days each.
The verdict has been followed by his acknowledgment of past mishaps. These include the supporting of Sirsa Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim in a blasphemy case.
On December 4, 2024, on the 2nd day of his punishment at the Golden Temple, Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. However, the accused, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, has been detained by the security personnel.
Chaura reportedly opened fire from his pistol, which hit the wall of the Gurudwara, as the security personnel overpowered him. He is a former terrorist and has a criminal history. An FIR has been registered against him, and he has been sent on police remand.
