Tata Motors Commences India’s First Hydrogen Truck Trials

Tata Motors has launched the country’s first-ever hydrogen-powered truck trials. The initiative, aimed at accelerating India’s transition to sustainable transportation, was inaugurated by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi.

The trial, funded under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will assess the feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks for long-haul freight movement. Over the next 24 months, 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks will be tested across key freight corridors, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinga Nagar.

Cutting-Edge Technology

These vehicles will incorporate two cutting-edge technologies Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV). The fleet includes two Tata Prima H.55S prime movers, one powered by H2ICE and another by FCEV, along with the Tata Prima H.28, an advanced H2ICE truck. With an operational range of 300-500 km, the trucks are designed for sustainable, cost-efficient, and high-performance freight transportation.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari emphasized the transformative potential of hydrogen in India’s transport sector, stating.

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future with immense potential to reduce emissions and enhance energy self-reliance. Such initiatives will accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility in heavy-duty trucking.”

Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, highlighted the importance of the project in India’s broader decarbonization goals, adding, “This trial is a major step forward in showcasing green hydrogen’s potential in revolutionizing India’s transportation sector.”

Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility, noting, “With this trial, Tata Motors continues to lead the transition to clean energy in long-haul transportation.”

Tata Motors has been at the forefront of alternative fuel innovations, offering battery electric, CNG, LNG, and hydrogen-powered vehicles across various commercial segments. The company has also successfully deployed 15 Hydrogen FCEV buses in India, further strengthening its position in green mobility solutions.
