In light of the recent terrorist attack inPahalgam, Kashmir, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reinforced its longstanding position on bilateral cricket relations with Pakistan. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla emphasized that India will not engage in any bilateral cricket series with Pakistan, aligning with the Indian government's firm stance.

Shukla expressed condolences to the victims of the attack and underlined that political circumstances and security concerns guide the BCCI’s decisions. “We are with the victims and we condemn this incident. Whatever our government will say, we will do. We do not engage with Pakistan in bilateral series because of the government's stand, and this will continue. However, we participate in ICC events as per international obligations. The ICC is also aware of the situation and will act accordingly,” he stated in an interview with Sports Tak.

Since 2012-13, when Pakistan last toured India for a short limited-overs series, the two nations have not played a bilateral series. India's last visit to Pakistan was in 2008. Currently, their encounters are limited to ICC tournaments, such as the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India. For the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India has declined to travel to Pakistan, leading to the decision to shift India's matches, including the high-profile clash with Pakistan and the final, to a neutral venue in Dubai.

Cricketing Community Mourns the Pahalgam Attack

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also issued a heartfelt message, expressing the cricket community’s sorrow and outrage over the tragic loss of innocent lives. “The cricketing world is deeply shocked and anguished by the gruesome terror attack at Pahalgam. On behalf of the BCCI, I condemn this cowardly act in the strongest possible terms. We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the souls of the departed,” Saikia said.

He added that in this moment of collective grief, the BCCI stands united with the nation, sharing the pain of the affected families.

Tribute at IPL Match No. 41

As a solemn mark of respect, the BCCI organized a tribute during the 41st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI), held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. A moment of silence lasting 60 seconds was observed before the start of play. This gesture was announced over the public address system, allowing both fans in the stadium and those watching at home to pay their respects.

During the toss, both team captains extended their condolences, condemning the heinous act and expressing solidarity with the victims’ families.

A Dignified Tribute: No Celebration, Only Silence

In an unprecedented move, the BCCI chose to conduct the game without the usual festive elements associated with IPL matches. As a mark of mourning, there were no cheerleader performances, celebratory fireworks, music, or DJ entertainment. The atmosphere at the stadium was kept quiet and dignified, in honor of those who lost their lives.

Additionally, players, match officials, commentators, and support staff wore black armbands throughout the game as a visual representation of their grief and respect. The commentators also acknowledged the tribute on air, reflecting on the emotional weight of the occasion and the collective sorrow of the nation.

A United Front in Times of Tragedy

The events at the IPL and the statements by BCCI officials underscore the powerful role of sport in national solidarity. The BCCI’s actions conveyed not only respect for the victims but also a strong message against terrorism. While political and diplomatic ties remain strained, the cricketing body ensured that its platform was used to promote unity, remembrance, and resolve.

This incident once again highlights how cricket in India extends beyond the boundary ropes, acting as a mirror to the nation's sentiments and a medium of collective expression during moments of both triumph and tragedy
