After the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the state television reportedly warned that "every American citizen or military personnel" in the Middle East is now on Tehran's "target" following US airstrikes on Iran's three nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.

"The US has committed a crime against Iran by violating Iran's airspace. It has no place in the West Asian region. Mr President of the United States, you started it and we will end it," the Iranian broadcaster said, while a graphic of US bases in the region ran in the background.

"The battle has just begun, Mr. Trump! Now you talk of peace? We will deal with you in a way that makes you understand the consequences of recklessness," another Iranian presenter said in a state TV program, the report said.

The US Attack on Iran Nuclear Sites

During a White House address on June 21, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States had carried out precision airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Trump declared the mission a “spectacular military success,” stating that the sites had been “completely and totally obliterated.”

He emphasized that the objective was to dismantle Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities and eliminate what he described as a significant threat posed by the Iranian regime. Trump warned that if Iran does not pursue peace, the U.S. is prepared to target additional sites, with future strikes potentially being “far greater and a lot easier”

The strikes mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict involving Iran and Israel, with the U.S. now directly involved militarily for the first time in this confrontation.

Following the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Iran launched a significant retaliatory missile barrage against Israel. Iran fired two volleys of 27 missiles targeting key Israeli sites including Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, research facilities, and military command centers..

The attacks caused extensive damage, especially in Tel Aviv and Haifa. Videos showed rescue teams combing through debris, damaged buildings, and injured civilians being evacuated. At least 20 people were wounded, according to Israeli emergency services.

The U.S. had initially tried to mediate between Iran and Israel. Trump had reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to delay military action, hoping for a diplomatic resolution. However, as the conflict intensified, the diplomatic path collapsed. Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday accused the United States and Israel of deliberately sabotaging diplomatic efforts by targeting his country’s nuclear facilities, saying both powers had “decided to blow up” negotiations.

Treaty on Nuclear Prohibitions

In order to negotiate a legally enforceable treaty that would forbid nuclear weapons and eventually lead to their complete abolition, the General Assembly resolved to hold a United Nations conference in 2017. In addition to the involvement and contribution of members of civil society and international organizations, the Assembly encouraged all Member States to attend the Conference.

A thorough list of restrictions on engaging in any nuclear weapon-related activities is contained in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Among these are pledges to refrain from creating, testing, manufacturing, obtaining, owning, storing, using, or threatening to use nuclear weapons. Additionally forbidden by the Treaty are the use of nuclear weapons on domestic soil and aiding any State in carrying out illegal actions.

Iran’s Stance on the Treaty

In spite of the fact that the nuclear-armed states "have continued to boost their nuclear arsenals," Iran celebrated the TPNW's 2021 implementation as "an achievement for the global movement towards nuclear disarmament."

Iran participated in the negotiation of the TPNW at the United Nations in New York in 2017 and was among 122 states that voted in favor of its adoption, even serving as the Vice-President of the bureau.

Iran, in its closing statement said that overall, the TPNW “has many positive points” but it “also lacks several elements that it was expected to encompass”.

However, once Israel launched a strike on Iran, Tehran threatened to walk away to walk away from the international treaty.

Israel, meanwhile, reiterated that its attacks are aimed at stalling Iran from building a nuclear bomb. Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. According to reports, Israel remains the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons, despite never officially acknowledging it.
