From Mumbai to Milan: Naomi Janumala Redefines Global Beauty Standards

In a fashion industry constantly on the lookout for the next big thing, Naomi Janumala stands out not just for her looks but for her defiance of conventional beauty norms. An Indian-origin model currently based in the United States, Naomi is rapidly emerging to be one of the most refreshing and powerful forces in global fashion. Her confident walk, awe-inspiring presence, and unapologetically authentic aesthetic have her booked on luxury runways and with global campaigns.
Naomi hails from a family with deep roots in Indian entertainment. Naomi comes from an entertainment-rich background as she is the niece of renowned comedian Johnny Lever and the daughter of popular stand-up comedian and mimicry artist Jimmy Moses Janumala. Naomi never depended on the recognition that came with her family's last name. She decided to pursue fashion rather than film and comedy because she wanted independence by picking this career path, which took root during her early teenage years.
Naomi started her modelling career at the young age of 16 in Mumbai. Although she was able to book modelling jobs, the experience frequently left her disenchanted. She remembers being rejected at auditions due to her dark complexion and being pressured to conform to fair-skinned beauty standards.
“Even when I was booked and busy, I wouldn't feel the best about myself,” she confessed. Since professional artists worked with foundation shades meant for pale-skinned models, the studio would further modify her complexion to appear even lighter during their finishing work on digital images. Her work environment experienced these discouraging experiences, which eroded her confidence until she doubted her position as a part of her industry.
Naomi took a courageous step in 2017 by relocating to a different location to pursue inclusive opportunities throughout fashion. Her career experienced a permanent change because of the risk she took. International fashion brands recognized her unique beauty characteristics combined with realness when they quickly approached her. During 2023 Naomi modeled in the Burberry Summer Showcase at London Fashion Week, which became a substantial accomplishment by displaying her genuine features, including textured hair and a radiant complexion.
“Burberry likes me best with absolutely no makeup and my natural hair—that alone says a lot,” she shared. In stark contrast to her early days in India, global fashion brands now celebrate the very qualities she was once told to hide.
Despite her growing fame, Naomi is still frequently introduced in India as “Johnny Lever’s niece.” While proud of her family, Naomi is firm about her own identity. “I got the Fenty campaign because of me, not because I'm someone’s niece,” she asserted. Her goal is to make her work famous rather than her familial heritage as she progresses towards this objective.
Her path reshapes more than her achievement because it demonstrates a changing trend in the modelling industry. Through her career, Naomi reshapes traditional European beauty standards and demonstrates the industry's gradual movement toward genuine inclusivity.
Through her life story, Naomi Janumala demonstrates outstanding resilience along with authenticity and courageous determination. Through determination, she pushed past boundaries that were imposed upon her to redefine the identity of a global model who comes from India. Her path offers inspiration to make young girls from various backgrounds recognize and adopt their differences before they follow their aspirations without restraint.
Naomi led the fashion industry into radical change because she established unique beauty benchmarks. Her participation in Mumbai studios and Milan run walks breaks barriers, which motivates future generations to embrace their skin with confidence.
