Meta Platforms Inc., under the leadership of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has announced a significant restructuring of its artificial intelligence operations with a sharp new focus on developing AI "superintelligence"—technology capable of performing tasks on par with, or surpassing, human capabilities. This bold move signifies Meta's unwavering commitment to being a frontrunner in the next wave of technological evolution.

Introducing Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL)

In an internal memo addressed to employees, Zuckerberg revealed that all of Meta’s AI efforts will now be consolidated under a newly formed division known as Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This newly structured unit is poised to become the epicenter of Meta's most advanced AI development initiatives.

Leading this charge will be Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, a company known for its expertise in data-labeling technologies for machine learning systems. Wang, described by Zuckerberg as the “most impressive founder of his generation,” will now assume the role of Chief AI Officer at Meta.

Zuckerberg also introduced Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, as a partner to Wang. Friedman will oversee product development and applied AI research, ensuring that the theoretical and practical dimensions of AI development advance in tandem. This leadership duo reflects Meta’s strategy of combining entrepreneurial vision with technical prowess to accelerate innovation.

Zuckerberg’s Vision: AI Superintelligence as Humanity’s Next Frontier

Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of this transition, stating that the accelerating pace of AI development means that achieving superintelligence is no longer a distant possibility but a tangible goal.

"I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way,” he wrote.

The CEO has previously shared his belief that AI will be the defining technology of the next 10 to 15 years. Although he acknowledges the risk of companies over-investing in AI out of fear of falling behind, he also maintains that such aggressive strategies are rational.

“The downside of being behind is that you're out of position for the most important technology shift,” he stated in a previous discussion.

Massive Investment and Talent Acquisition

Meta’s renewed focus on AI is backed by a staggering financial commitment. The company plans to invest “hundreds of billions” of dollars in AI research and infrastructure over the coming years. This includes state-of-the-art chips, advanced data centers, and the development of new models.

Earlier this month, Meta made headlines with its $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, which also secured Wang’s transition to Meta. The company has also been in acquisition talks with Perplexity AI Inc., Runway AI Inc., and is reportedly finalizing a deal to acquire PlayAI, a startup specializing in voice replication technologies using AI.

In terms of talent, Zuckerberg has taken an unusually hands-on approach, personally courting top minds in AI by hosting recruitment gatherings at his homes in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe. Meta has reportedly offered compensation packages—including stock options—worth tens of millions to elite AI researchers.

Formation of Advanced AI Units

The newly created MSL will incorporate Meta’s existing teams working on large language models (LLMs), AI-based products, and its Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team. A new laboratory is also being launched under the MSL umbrella to focus specifically on developing the next generation of AI models, further reinforcing Meta’s deep-rooted commitment to future AI capabilities.

The latest round of hiring brought in 11 new top-tier AI experts from prominent AI organizations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. Notable new hires include former DeepMind researchers Jack Rae and Pei Sun, and OpenAI veterans like Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, Shengjia Zhao, and Hongyu Ren. Additionally, Joel Pobar from Anthropic—who previously spent over a decade at Meta—has also returned to contribute to this new initiative.
