What began as a war between nations has now become a desperate battle for survival for thousands of innocent lives. Initially marked by military confrontations and political negotiations, the situation in Gaza today has descended into a humanitarian catastrophe. Over 2 million people are trapped in conditions where even the most basic necessities—food, water, shelter, and medical care—are scarce or completely unavailable.

Food, clothing, and shelter—three basic necessities—are now being severely compromised. The world is not blind to the harsh reality: people are dying from hunger. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that essential nutrition services have collapsed entirely. Infants are left without access to safe drinking water, breastmilk substitutes, or therapeutic feeding, putting their lives at immediate risk.

The Food Crisis in Gaza

As the world is watching how Gaza is fighting its battle. There have been several life shattering cases witnessed in the nation ever since the war took place. Approximately 4,70,000 people are suffering from catastrophic hunger (IPC Phase 5) as confirmed by UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund).

IPC Phase 5, reportedly, is a severe level of food scarcity within the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). As per the system-

At least 20% of the population of area experiences food scarcity.
Prevalence of Global acute malnutrition reaches 30% among children
Death rate reaches 2 deaths per 10,000 people due to starvation or related health issues.

As per UNICEF's report, child malnutrition rates in Gaza have soared to 16.5% which means it has increased fourfold from where it was two months ago. An agency further noted that around 39% of people are forced to go days without eating.

While UNICEF released the insights to this alarming issue, WFP (World Food Programme) Executive Director, Cindy McCain highlighted the need of providing the nation with food air. He said-

"We have to flood Gaza with large scale food aid, immediately and without obstruction, and keep it flowing each and every day to prevent mass starvation. People are already dying of malnutrition, and the longer we wait to act, the higher the death toll will rise."

As the reports have stated that child malnutrition quadrupled, statistically, there were 6,500 children admitted for treatment for malnutrition in June. However, in just first two months of July, 5000 of children were admitted to the hospital for same reasons.

This means, 1750 more children suffered from this. The breakdown in tabular form is as follows-

Gaza is dying of Starvation

Food is a basic human right, yet in Gaza, its scarcity has become a source of profound suffering. Children go to bed hungry, while mothers watch helplessly as their children wither from starvation. People are being killed or injured simply trying to reach food.

This is no longer just a war—it is a moral collapse. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has described the humanitarian crisis as “carnage in Gaza.” It added that the scale of human suffering is staggering, and the collapse of basic services is pushing people to the brink of survival.

"Hunger is being weaponised. Forced displacement has become a death sentence. People are desperate to survive."

World Health Organisation (WHO) hase noted that in year 2025, there were 74 malnutrition related deaths reported. Out of this, 63 occurred in July as of July 25, 2025. Among 63 deaths, there were-

24 children under the age of 5,
a child over five, and
38 adults

According to WHO, one in five children under five in Gaza city now suffers from severe acute malnutrition. In Khan Younis and the Middle area, rates have doubled in less than a month. The Director General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom has called it "mass starvation."

Since March 2025, Gaza has been under complete blockade. There was no food, no fuel, no medicine and no water purification supplies. Although, some aid resumed in mid-May, deliveries remain far below of what is needed.

There have been several pictures surfacing on social media from Gaza, which reveal real pain. UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer on July 29 said, "People in Britain are revolted at what they are seeing on their screen."

He expressed his concerns for the Gaza and stated that the "suffering must end" and emphasized on the images of starving people. He said, "images will stay with us for a lifetime." Extending his words, he noted on his discussion with US President Trump on this and revealed the idea of supplying possible aid to Gaza.
