In a conflict characterized by frontlines, missiles, and long-range artillery, Ukraine has simply turned the book of rules on its head. On June 1, in an ambitious and carefully orchestrated drone assault christened "Spider Web," Ukraine penetrated deep into Russian territory—destroying or disabling key military aircraft, humiliating Russian air defences, and demonstrating a new sophistication in asymmetric warfare.

What made this raid remarkable wasn't the distance or size—it was the stealth. Over 117 drones launched from inside Russian soil, hitting five military airfields across more than 8,000 kilometers. It took Ukraine 1 year, 6 months, and 9 days to prepare—and only a single night to pull off.

The Mission Brief: Patience Meets Precision

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky personally supervised Operation Spider Web. With satisfaction and pride, he revealed that the planning took over 18 months. An operation was organized by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and military intelligence, managing a multi-regional attack on five Russian airbases: Olenegorsk in Murmansk, Belaya in Irkutsk, Dyagilevo in Ryazan, Shaykovka in Kaluga, and Ukrainka in Amur.

The objective? To disable Russia’s long-range strategic bomber fleet and weaken its capacity for future missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.

As drone swarms lifted off from within Russia, their targets were precise and devastating. Zelensky remarked, “Russia has had very tangible losses, and justifiably so.”

Smuggling the Swarm: A Masterclass in Covert Infiltration

Perhaps the most astonishing part of the operation was how the drones got there in the first place.

According to SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk, the drones were smuggled into Russia in wooden structures—disguised as prefabricated cabins—mounted on cargo trucks. These makeshift drone-launchers had remote-controlled roofs that slid open, allowing the quadcopters to take off once in position.

Ukraine claimed it destroyed or damaged at least 13 of Russia’s long-range strategic bombers—specifically, Tu-95s, Tu-22s, and Tu-160s. All are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. These aircraft have been the backbone of Russia’s missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian and energy infrastructure.

With Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers no longer in production, the loss of even a few represents a serious strategic setback for Moscow. Repair will be difficult; replacement, nearly impossible.

High Above the Battlefield: A-50 Spy Planes in the Crosshairs

The attack also appears to have targeted A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft—Russia’s equivalent of flying radar stations. These planes guide fighter jets, track incoming threats, and manage battlefield coordination.

Ukraine believes Russia possesses only around eight A-50s. Harming even one is a blow to Russia’s situational awareness. Though no confirmed visuals have emerged showing a destroyed A-50 in this strike, Ukraine’s message was clear: nothing in Russia’s airspace is untouchable.

Technology in Simplicity: The Drones Behind the Web

Unlike sophisticated military drones used by major powers, the ones used in Operation Spider Web were relatively simple quadcopters—compact, nimble, and effective. According to British drone expert Dr. Steve Wright, the real innovation lay not in the drones’ hardware but in their deployment.

“These were not overly complex drones,” Wright explained. “What made this attack quite extraordinary was the ability to smuggle them into Russia and then launch and command them remotely.”

Many drones appeared to be guided via satellite signals or using pre-programmed coordinates. In regions where GPS signals were jammed, some may have been flown manually—suggesting human operators were stationed inside Russian territory.

Zelensky confirmed this: “Each of the 117 drones had its own operator.” That means over 100 Ukrainian agents or sympathizers working deep behind enemy lines, a feat that required astonishing logistical coordination and secrecy.

From the Arctic to the Pacific: A Nation Under Fire

The breadth of the attack stunned observers. Drones attacked military bases as far north as Murmansk, above the Arctic Circle, and as far east as the Amur region—near the Pacific Ocean and Russia’s border with China.

The Russian Defense Ministry admitted to the strikes but said damage was minimal and the “terrorist attacks” effectively countered. However, photos, videos, and satellite data suggest otherwise.

In Olenegorsk, fires lit up the sky after drones hit the base. At Belaya, new craters appeared near runway intersections. At Ukrainka, satellite images showed darkened blast marks near hangars. Russia has been scrambling to contain the psychological and strategic fallout.

Fallout and Denial: Russia’s Official Silence

Despite the magnitude of the attack, Russian state media was largely silent. After an initial flurry of local Telegram reports, most major television outlets dropped the story entirely. No mention of the losses appeared in Kremlin broadcasts the following day.

The Price Tag: $7 Billion and Counting

The SBU estimated the cost of damage inflicted on Russia at around $7 billion. That figure includes destroyed aircraft, disrupted operations, and long-term losses in military capacity. For Ukraine, the cost of executing such an operation was exponentially lower—demonstrating the power of asymmetric warfare.

This kind of strategic imbalance is what makes the Spider Web operation so significant. For a fraction of the cost and without deploying a single man across a border, Ukraine delivered one of the deepest penetrations into Russian airspace in modern history.

Operation Spider Web has shifted the dynamics of the Ukraine-Russia war. While Ukraine continues to battle Russian troops on the ground and fends off missile barrages, it has now demonstrated it can reach across the border—and do so with precision.
